About SpringSurprise.com

This site was started to host my personal ramblings about technical issues I have faced.  I intended it originally to serve as a repository of the some of the hacks and modifications I’ve made to my system, but I have since broadened the scope to include other ramblings on various software design and management issues.

The name of this site is a reference to the death of Archimedes.  It was a tragic loss to the ancient world, as Archimedes was truly an extraordinary genius.  With the recent discovery of a palimpset of his works, it is clear that we would be in a radically different world if his gifts were not lost.

The origin of the domain name derives from a skit on Monty Python’s Flying Circus involving some unusual chocolate candies.  Yes, juxtaposed to the Archimedes reference is a little unusual, but it so are my interests.

About the author

I am Steven Black, a computer software professional with over 20 years experience.  My technical specialties include server design, networking, scaling, and site reliability.  I’ve also been doing a lot of security-related work, including encryption, input validation, anti-hack defenses, and systems monitoring.

While I’ll always enjoy coding, I’ve been managing software development projects for the last few years.  I’ve learned that I can accomplish more through directing the efforts of others than by acting as an individual contributor.
